Who should take this course?

This globally-recognized certification program is the best way to begin your life-long adventure as a certified scuba diver. Personalized training is combined with in-water practice sessions to ensure you have the skills and experience required to become truly comfortable underwater. You will earn the SSI Open Water Diver certification.

You must be 10 years old to enrol in an Open Water Diver course (or Junior Open Water Diver course).  Adequate swimming skills are essential and you need to be in good health. No prior scuba diving experience is required.

What will you learn?

The SSI Open Water Diver course consists of three main components:

1. Online Knowledge Development, to understand the basic principles of scuba diving, using either the MYSSI App or online at diveSSI.com
2. Confined Water Training sessions in a private heated indoor pool to learn basic scuba skills
3. Open Water Dives off the Taranaki coastline to use your skills and explore!                                      

The maximum training depth for your Open Water Dives is 18 meters / 60 feet (age 15+)                              

What scuba gear will you use?

You will learn to use basic scuba gear including a regulator, buoyancy control device, a weight system and a tank. You will need to supply your own mask and snorkel, fins, and environmental protection by way of a wetsuit, hood, boots and gloves.

After signing up with SSI you'll have FREE access to the SSI Basic Freediving and Snorkeling course and SSI Try Scuba and Scuba Diver programs. If you want to continue with any of these courses your then visit Oceans Alive Dive Center and register for the complete program.

What are the course costs?

You pay $650.00 instore to us - this covers the online learning, three pool sessions and four open water dives plus use of our basic scuba equipment
