ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES REGULATIONS

Open Water SCUBA diving is an activity subject to the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016.  Oceans Alive has a current OutdoorsMark certification which shows that we have met the highest standard of safety in the adventure activities industry.

THE TEAM

After operating Oceans Alive for over eleven years, Kevin and Halina have passed the reins over to John Kennedy the new owner operator. Most of you will already know John as he has been a part of the Oceans Alive Dive team for a number of years. He has been working as a safety diver for the OPITO training as well as instructing scuba and freedivers.

The atmosphere in store is usually relaxed and friendly and we always share a yarn and a chuckle with our customers. But don’t let the banter fool you because when teaching people to dive, safety and professionalism take over.

JOHN

John, a passionate ocean enthusiast, has immersed himself in all things related to the sea. His journey began at the tender age of sixteen when he embarked on recreational diving, eventually advancing to become an expert in both scuba and freediving instruction. With over a decade of experience as a highly skilled OPITO HUET safety diver, John assumed ownership of Oceans Alive in 2022.

Driven by a desire to democratize ocean exploration, John is committed to making the wonders of the sea accessible to everyone. He approaches business with transparency and sincerity, always ready to go the extra mile to help clients achieve their objectives. While his jovial demeanor may suggest otherwise, John prioritizes safety above all else, ensuring that clients receive top-notch training, reliable products, and the expertise of Oceans Alive’s qualified staff. Reach out to him today and embark on your aquatic adventures with confidence!

MIAH

As a young girl the ocean was always calling, whether it be for a brief moment or a long excursion, it has always called.

From a beginning of ducking under waves to becoming an open water dive I have always been connected to the ocean and as I grew so did my love for our Moana.

After leaving high school, I ended up in Tauranga studying marine science and working my way up to divemaster while exploring and learning about the ocean.

My love of anything ocean lead me to becoming a dive instructor, so not only can I live my passion but I can also guild others towards a new understanding of our oceans

KEVIN

KEVIN has worked as a Dive Instructor in New Plymouth for nearly thirty years.  During that time, he gained a reputation for doing everything he could to help people become safer and better divers. His customers received exceptional teaching, honest assistance in gear selection and precision servicing and maintenance of dive equipment.

Most of Kevin’s diving adventures involve a camera and the gathering of beautiful images of the underwater world.  “I have a passion for all marine life, but my favorite underwater creature is the EAGLE RAY (Aetobatus narinari) seen on our business logo”

Kevin is the service technician for the shop, works as a safety diver and remains ‘on call’ as part of the Dive Team.

HALINA

Halina grew up on Wellington’s South Coast where her family were always on or near the wild Cook Strait waters.

She has been involved in all aspects of Oceans Alive administration and operation since its inception in 2011.  Halina still plays an important role as the “Paper-Work Person” for Oceans as well as keeping the Safety Management System compliant with the Adventure Activities Regulations.

“I have been diving for nearly 15 years and although I really love seafood, it was the peace and beauty of the underwater world that got me hooked.”

Halina’s favorite land creature is her horse LowKey and as follows the SEA HORSE (Hippocampus) is her favorite ocean dweller.

WHO IS SSI

Scuba Schools International grew out of the passion of a few avid divers who were intent on making it possible for anyone to learn how to scuba dive.
